About
Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum is housed in philanthropist and steel magnate Andrew Carnegie’s former mansion on museum mile. Built at the turn of the century, its fin de siècle interiors feature ornate coffered oak ceilings, carved boiserie paneling , custom-made wallcoverings, and a conservatory with Palladian bronze and glass doors. A top-to-bottom interior and exterior renovation sensitively restored the grandeur of the mansion’s exquisite craftsmanship and injected contemporary architectural features to transform one of New York’s grandest residences into a dynamic, dramatic setting for gatherings of all sizes. Situated on the highest point of Fifth Avenue with expansive views of Central Park, the mansion also enjoys one of the city’s largest enclosed gardens. The newly rejuvenated Arthur Ross Terrace and Garden has been redesigned to integrate contemporary landscape features with the garden’s historic plantings, and is open year-round for tented or plein-air events.

Health & Safety
In light of local conditions and the “Key to NYC” program, for public health and safety, all visitors ages 12+ are required to be vaccinated against COVID-19 in order to visit Cooper Hewitt. Visitors under age 12—and therefore ineligible for vaccination—are exempt from the requirement but must be accompanied by a vaccinated adult. In order to enter the Museum, SHOP, and café, eligible visitors are required to show proof of at least one vaccination dose with a vaccine approved by the World Health Organization and a matching photo ID. The Museum will not save or store your vaccine information. Visitors to the Garden only are not required to show proof of vaccination, but those who are not vaccinated should wear a face-covering outdoors and practice social distancing. Essentially, if the event will be indoors or utilize any indoor space, all attendees must show proof of vaccination and some form of photo ID. If the event is only in the Garden then proof of vaccination is not required.
