The building, which miraculously escaped the fury of the Rione Carità redevelopment in 1875 and the bombings of World War II, stands in the Monteoliveto area, which has always been occupied by the former monastery of the Olivetan monks, today the headquarters of the Pastrengo barracks. It was the seat and Neapolitan residence of the scholar Giuseppe Valletta, who lived between 1636 and 1714 and whose antique collection that bears his name is now kept in the Girolamini library in via Duomo (source StoriaCity).
