About

After the oil crisis in 1973, five tanks were built between 1976 and 1978 to store 69.07 million liters of oil, enough for Seoul citizens to consume for about a month at the time. It was done, but after 10 years of not finding a way to utilize it, in 2013, through a citizen idea contest, it was decided to transform it into a cultural reserve base. At that time, tanks that stored oil changed their role to culture tanks that created a different culture every day instead of oil. The existing five tanks were transformed into open cultural spaces, and T6, which was made using steel plates from dismantled tanks, became a community space for citizens. The empty outdoor space was turned into a cultural yard for children to play. The forest remaining on the site was preserved as much as possible, and various types of flowers and trees were planted to make it a park. On the trail leading to Maebongsan Mountain, you can often see hares and squirrels. The space that represented the era of industrialization centered on oil and construction has been reborn as an eco-cultural park centered on eco-friendliness, regeneration, and culture. Unique cultural events such as markets, exhibitions, performances and workshops are constantly held here. Citizens share an ecologically friendly and creative way of life here as cooperative citizens, cooperative citizens, and active citizens. In the future, the Oil Tank Culture Park will continue to be filled with citizens as a space for cultural production.
