For almost 50 years, environmental non-profit GrowNYC has been working alongside residents to transform communities and empower residents to make our city clean, healthy and sustainable. The first Greenmarket opened in 1976 and since then, the organization has been operating the largest open air farmers' market in the country, building and maintaining community and school gardens, offering hands-on education for all ages, and running a citywide recycling outreach program. Project Farmhouse grew out of the idea of creating a central location where New Yorkers of all stripes can get closer to our food, to the land and to our neighbors. Despite being the largest city in the U.S., New York does not have a center for environmental issues– such as we do for photography, or cultural heritage or art. As the impacts of climate change are apparent, a need for an international center for learning, discussion and action is critical. Project Farmhouse gives sustainability a platform for dialogue and action – the first of its kind. A broad, dynamic range of programming gets hands dirty, plant ideas and foster healthier, greener decisions and actions. We welcome you to Project Farmhouse! Visit our calendar of events to find an event that interests you. And if you are looking to rent the space: know your rental underwrites hands-on environmental education.
