National Museum of the American Indian
In partnership with Native peoples and their allies, the National Museum of the American Indian fosters a richer shared human experience through a more informed understanding of Native peoples.
The Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian in New York opened as the George Gustav Heye Center in 1994 at the Alexander Hamilton U.S. Custom House. This vast seven-story building, designed by prominent architect Cass Gilbert in the early 1900s, is considered one of the most splendid Beaux-Arts buildings in New York City.
