About

The University of Puerto Rico received its first donation of works of art in 1914 when the existence of a museum was not yet envisioned. Don Federico Degetau, the first resident commissioner in Washington, whose goal was to establish an art gallery on the island, donates a set of paintings that he acquired during his travels through Europe. When the collection was delivered to the Institution, it was exhibited in the building where the Academic Senate is located today. However, the works were subsequently displayed on the walls of classrooms and offices of the University for many years.
